Establishing an Enterprise Risk Management Program
Has your bank established an initial Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program or are you still struggling with getting started and understanding what it should look like?
For those institutions frustrated with the concept of ERM or feel it’s too complicated, don’t worry because several banks are struggling with these same challenges. The banking industry continues to experience several economic and regulatory events, which in turn, has caused examiners to raise the level of scrutiny on an institution’s risk management program. Examiners are evaluating an institutions ability to integrate risk management across different risk disciplines and leverage this information for smarter decision-making. This highlights the growing need for bank leadership to demonstrate their ability to effectively inventory, aggregate, and monitor key risks which could impact the banks strategy planning and execution.
- Make enterprise wide risk management everyone’s responsibility, starting at the top
- Create a risk governance framework to assist in the identification and assessment of key risks and aligning them with the institution’s strategic goals
- Creating risk appetites and acceptable risk levels
- Leverage a top-down approach with a bottom-up process to capture significant risks
- Understanding, monitoring, reporting and managing the risks within different business units (three lines of defense)
- Develop an integrated approach to risk management for smarter decision-making
