CBA Announces Bank Counsel Panelists: Legal Experts to Discuss Ethics Issues Faced by In-House Counsel

The California Bankers Association is excited to announce that featured legal panelists at this year’s 122nd Annual Convention and 46th Annual Bank Counsel Seminar will include general counsel, the chair of a major professional service litigation firm and a USC law professor.

Mike Cahill, executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of City National Bank and City National Corporation, Robert Meyer, partner and chair of Professional Services Litigation and Donald Scotten, associate academic director, graduate and international programs, and adjunct assistant professor of law at USC, will present this year’s panel called, “Then Find a Way to do it: Ethics Issues Faced by In-House Counsel.”

The panelists will discuss ethical issues faced when counseling management about their expectations and drafting appropriate documents and disclosures. They will also touch on ethical consideration and conflicts faced by in-house and outside counsel when management sets goals that approach or exceed the limits of law and regulation.

Mike Cahill currently oversees the corporate administrative and risk group at City National Bank, which consists of legal, compliance, CRA, corporate premises, OREO, real estate appraisal, and corporate security, with administrative reporting responsibility for risk management, internal audit and credit risk review. He joined City National in 2001 with broad line and staff management experience in the financial services industry, and substantial expertise in mergers and acquisitions, commercial transactions, risk management, governance, capital formation and strategic planning.

Robert Meyer practices commercial litigation and his clients include professional firms, major corporations, banks, brokers and other financial institutions. He also serves as a mediator in complex litigation.

Associate Academic Director, Graduate and International Programs, and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Law, USC Gould School of Law

Donald Scotten specializes in business law and business entity governance. He teaches business organizations, mergers & acquisitions, and introduction to the U.S. legal system at USC’s Gould School of law. He also serves as cousel for Akerman Senterfitt LLP. Previously, he was first vice president and senior counsel for Countrywide Home Loans, Inc., and he also was a senior associate at Howrey LLP. He is chair of the California State Bar’s Partnership and Limited Liability Company Committee.
