CBA BANKING SCHOOLS
As a result of CBA members lamenting the shortage of trained commercial business
lenders, CBA developed and implemented its first Commercial Lending School
in 2003. This highly concentrated, 32-day instructional program is designed
for junior commercial lenders, credit analysts, business development officers
and branch managers. It is the same type of program the larger banks used
to maintain internally, but is focused on the needs of our community bankers.
If you are concerned about the shortage of trained lenders, get ahead of the
curve and send your qualified applicants to the 2007 school.
The school is a comprehensive six-month program, comprised of six one-week
sessions (one session each month).

The graduate program is specifically designed to elevate the effectiveness
of seasoned commercial lenders through learning the industry's best practices.
The program is structured similar to CBA's proven commercial lending school
with over 140 hours of intensive instructor led training spanning six months.
At the end of the program, all candidates must pass an intensive 8 hour examination.
The Graduate Program will boost attendee's knowledge and effectiveness in
both originations and portfolio management by addressing key topics such as
advanced financial statement analysis, loan structuring, real estate lending
and appraisal, import/export financing, ag lending, the early identification

Director Development provides resources, solutions and intelligence to improve
performance as a director and enhance the contribution the board makes to
the success of the institution through an integrated program of seminars,
workshops and briefings.
Bank Directors Council
A driving force behind the program has CBA's Bank Directors Council, which
was formed in 2007 to provide direction, insight and focus to CBA's approach
to Director Training. Chaired by Howard Gould, former Commissioner
California Department of Financial Institutions and now Vice-Chairman of Carpenter
and Co, the Council consists of past and present bank Chairmen, CEOs and Directors,
as well as bank attorneys and former regulators.
Good Governance, Better Banks
The guiding principle behind CBA's Director Development is Good Governance,
Better Banks.
As the director's role has become more complicated, directors need answers
to increasingly complex questions. These questions span the breadth and depth
of duties, responsibilities and liabilities in the evolving world of governance.
Curriculum Overview
Director Development equips directors at every level of experience with the
knowledge, skills and understanding of the roles, responsibilities, regulatory
and legal requirements necessary to perform effectively in the changing environment
of corporate governance.
New Director Training addresses the needs of directors new
to the director role, and directors new to banking, including directors of
de novo banks. The curriculum is an integrated program: each component builds
on and assumes a familiarity with what precedes it.
Ongoing Director Training focuses on directors with board and
banking experience. The a la carte curriculum provides updates on corporate
governance regulations and focuses on banking concepts applicable to the boards
of established banks, the dynamics which affect board effectiveness and best
practices.

The Leadership 2008 series (L08) provides in-depth treatment of specific
tools, techniques and processes. Taught by leading banking practitioners,
L08 seminars are intended for mid-to-upper-level bankers as well as directors,
and focus on applicable ideas and how they can be implemented, and on why
they matter to directors and management, who together make up the leadership
of the institution.
Six one-day leadership seminars are planned for 2008:
-
Asset & Liability Management
The seminar addresses the issues related to the strategic management of
the balance sheet to better meet risk objectives and earnings expectations,
including risk/return tradeoffs, liquidity management, interest rate risk
and capital measurement and management and key current balance sheet management
challenges.
-
Mergers and Acquisitions
An interactive simulation which provides an opportunity to analyze a potential
M&A transaction, examine and evaluate the players, their market position
and financials, explore alternative valuation tools, and apply the financial
conclusions in a competitive situation.
-
Enterprise Risk Management
An in-depth look using industry best practices at how to tailor and implement
enterprise-wide risk management, including establishing a risk culture,
understanding the tools and techniques for risk management efficiency,
in the context of the regulators' expectations and the roles of management
and the board.
-
Strategic Management of Financial Institutions
The seminar will focus on the link between excellence in strategic planning
and superior operating performance and how to achieve both in a fast-changing
environment, including an exploration of the need for big-picture thinking,
how to develop an effective strategic planning process and how to implement
such a process.
-
Talent Management
The seminar explores not only the latest techniques and tools for managing
human capital resources but also examines the new thinking about how talent
management bridges the gap between strategy and execution, beyond the
traditional role of what was once called the "Personnel Department".
-
Brand Management
"Ultimately," says Jeff Bezos of Amazon, "a brand is the
things people say about you when you're not there." This seminar
looks at the reality and practicalities of creating and managing an effective
brand and how banks can differentiate themselves in an increasingly commoditized
market place.
